My Own Experience with Arve

I would like to write a piece about how I’ve experienced Arve myself, although I haven’t met him that often, the times we talked were always impressive. Especially since he could not only tell much about Sties, but also because he liked his job and was driven to keep his car clean and maintained. “My truck is the business card of Sties,” he said. I also have made some pictures of his car, even... Read More...
His Final Years

In his final years Arve drove with a permanent second driver in the truck. This driver was Trond Erik Sperre. Both names decorated the Volvo FH 12. Just as his previous truck, Arve put with big letters “Volvo” on front of the cabin, so you could see from afar when Arve was coming. On a modest spot the logo of Larvik, the place he lived, came. With this truck, they made several trips to several... Read More...

In memory of Arve (Arabern) Almerud. By Geir Sundets (Translated from Norwegian to Dutch by Wim Varenkamp) In the second night of 1999 Arve “the Arab” Almerud died. The confirmation that our friend and deeply respected international transport colleague had left us after a stroke, was a big shock to the drivers environment. For everyone who had the pleasure to meet Arve, drive with him, hear his... Read More...

The next description and photo’s are about Arve (Arabern) Almerud’s Truck. This was a Volvo FH12 combination with Bussbygg loading platforms. At first sight, it looked an regular truck just like the other FH12’s, but because Arve liked to put his own mark on trucks, it changed a little. At the front of the cabin came in big letters: Volvo, these letters were red and white. On the side of the... Read More...

This is my model of the Volvo FH 420, which you can see on the picture on the left. I have built this model for Bussbygg, a company specialized in car parts that build up the real car. The real truck you see on the picture, is the one that has delivered the model to the Bussbygg offices. The minitiature models are pictured below. Conrad, Mos and Tekno delivered the model parts. You can find a description... Read More...

During one of the outings of the company I work for, we went to Sweden and we spent the weekend in Gothenburg. To get to Sweden, we had to take the Stena Line ferry from Kiel to Gothenburg. When we were all aboard and checked out the decks, I wandered of to the car deck, to find out if I could find any Sties trucks. Nothing, bad luck. However, we still had to take a ferry back to Kiel, so who knows. On... Read More...

1963. Sties first carriage with fish to Spain. We were loading the fish by Frionor in Trondheim to deliver in Madrid. It was a long way to drive. The distance from Trondheim to Madrid was about 3600 kilometers. Spain was under the dicta tor ship of General Franco. The border controls were very strict and it was difficult to get permission to drive trucks into Spain. There were soldiers and police everywhere... Read More...

Stie’s first transport of fish to the European continent was going to Italy in 1962. I was driver with the truck “Betzy” loaded up to the ceiling with whole frozen Porbeagle fish. We had to load the fish in Aalesund, 550 km north of Oslo. But there was a problem. The truck “Betzy” had tree axels. Because of bad roads, it was not allowed to drive with tree axels trucks on the road around Aalesund. There... Read More...
Stie’s on the ferry: how it all started

A new ferry line Oslo – Kiel started at May 1961. The line was operated by a new car ferry with the name Kronprins Harald. She was a small ferry boat compare with the car ferry to day. But she was a luxurious ship, mainly built for small passenger cars. This new ferry line was very interesting for Stie, as it would mean a 24 hour sail to Kiel instead of driving 800 km through Sweden and Denmark .There... Read More...
