The Story of Betzy
In the sixties and seventies, it was quite common to baptize your truck with a nice name. So did Jan Sunlay, one of the first drivers for STIES. Jan’s father designed and created two wonderful name plates for both sides of his Scania-Vabis LS-75. For many years, the name plates served as a mascot on Jan’s travels.
After years of preservation, the name plates have found a new place on the truck of Stift Sties Venner, supervised by Morten Gran. The renovated Scania-Vabis, Betzy, visits many truck shows, not only in Norway, but also in Sweden, Denmark and in the Netherlands..
I have been honored with a visit of Betzy on my doorstep, right before Betzy had to star at the Truckstar Power Festival in Assen (NL).
Betzy has been renovated in Denmark, and then returned to Kiel, Germany. For nostalgic reasons, Betzy has been loaded on the ferry Prinsesse Ragnhild by Captain Halvorsen, who use to do this when the crew had to carry out the loading themselves. Betzy was picked up by a number of 30 drivers, former employees – also Jan Sunlay participated here – as well as myself, Gerrit de Heus, and my cousin Gerrit.
